If you travel by car to a holiday destination, a little preparation can make your life much easier. You never know what trials or adventures await you!
Take a few moments of your time to do the following:
- Check your car before you leave
To get stranded is the worst thing that can happen. Your holiday will be spoilt if your car breaks down. Remember, in South Africa, help is usually only two hours away these days. Check your vehicle thoroughly before taking the long road:
- Tires (including spare wheel) and brakes
- Headlights and brake lights
- Indicator lights
- Steering gear
- Always obey the rules of the road
Do not exceed the speed limit, tighten up, be alert and never drive drunk.
All passengers must put their seatbelts on and the driver is responsible to make sure that everyone is buckled up.
- Pay attention to the road
A major contributing factor to car accidents is when drivers focus on something other than the way ahead of them. An accident can happen fast if you talk on your cell phone or send text messages, turn around to talk with passengers on the back seat, eat or read while driving. Using your mobile phone while driving is illegal in South Africa. In some provinces, traffic officials are seizing mobile phones. So, for you, your passengers and other road users safety: think before using your mobile phone while driving!
- Take a break regularly
The long road can make you tired. It is advisable to stop every two hours to stretch legs and get some fresh air. If you feel too tired to drive further, rest for a while. You can rather arrive a bit later at your destination than maybe never …
A peaceful journey means that everyone will arrive at the holiday destination in the right mood. The most important part of taking a road trip, is to enjoy it!
