As one of the world’s best-selling liquors, Amarula must definitely be on the top of your list. It is a cream-based liquer, distilled from the marula fruit and then aged in oak for two years before it’s blended with cream. You can buy it almost anywhere, even at Duty Free at the airport, but don’t put it in your carry-on luggage before you pass security checkpoint as it will be confiscated.


Nothing says “Truly South African” as well as Rooibos. Found in only one region of South Africa, specifically in the town of Clanwilliam, Rooibos is found nowhere else in the world. You will be able to find Rooibos tea bags in your hotel rooms or in the supermarkets and there are also a wide range of beauty products that can be bought.

Bead crafts

Bead crafts are found at mostly craft markets and is a colourful and inexpensive souvenirs. From a range of bracelets, animal figures and coasters you are sure to find the perfect bead craft gift for everyone on your souvenirs list.

Ostrich products (leather, feathers and eggs)

The biggest selection of Ostrich products can be found in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape Province, but you can also easily buy these products in other parts of the country. With a selection of luxurious handbags, belts and wallets, to painted or carved ostrich eggs, the possibilities and price range of these products are endless and shouts “Made in South Africa”


Biltong is the South African version of beef jerky and is traditionally spiced with black pepper and coriander. For all meat lovers it’s a must buy item, and although it’s traditionally made from beef, you will be able to find it in a variety of other meats (like different game meats) and styles.
