The December summer holiday in South Africa is here and it’s time to start planning where to go. Here are some popular destinations and places to stay to get you thinking.

Cape Town

Need we say anything? The Mother City in summer has so much to offer – from beaches to natural scenery and much more – so it’s little wonder that local and international tourists flock to the city, especially in its magical summer.

Cape West Coast

Unspoilt white beaches, the chilly turquoise waters of the Atlantic, quaint fishing villages and indigenous fynbos make up the wild and wonderful Cape West Coast from Langebaan and Jacobsbaai to Paternoster and St Helena Bay.

Zululand: St Lucia

View hippos up close on a St Lucia boat cruise, snorkel at Cape Vidal and scuba dive at Sodwana, view the Big Five in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park and enjoy relaxation and adventure aplenty on the pristine beaches, dune forests and in the warm ocean. A major drawcard between October and March is the viewing of giant leatherback turtles – this is their only breeding ground on the subcontinent.

Eastern Cape coastline

With soft sand dunes, warm lagoons and ocean currents, the Eastern Cape is a great alternative for those looking for something a bit warmer and quieter than the popular Atlantic Ocean coastal resorts.

Although it can be busy during the holidays (like most coastal towns), Arniston is still relaxed and laid-back. Originally a fishing village (the whole town is now a national monument) the lime washed and thatched houses still dot the coastline and fisherman still go out to sea in traditional boats.

Most places book up very quickly over the December period so be sure to plan your holiday as soon as possible so you’re not left disappointed and stuck at home!
